Colorado Faiths Come Together to Promote Religious Freedom and Partnership

In honor of this year’s convergence of the holy days of Ramadan, Passover, Vaisakhi and Easter in April this year, Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared April 21 Religious Freedom Day, and took part in an interfaith gathering in its honor at the State Capitol.

“One of the great things about the state of Colorado is our diverse perspectives,” Polis said. “It’s a principle that our country was founded upon.”

Religious leaders joining the governor in the celebration included Rabbi Caryn Aviv, Rabbinic and Program Director at Judaism Your Way; Jeff Hunt with Colorado Christian University; Imam Shafi Abdul Aziz with the Colorado Center for Islamic Outreach, and Dilpreet Jammu with Colorado Sikhs.

“Even when we disagree, I think there is value in practicing inclusion and practicing respect for another person’s dignity and humanity and sitting through our differences in our discomfort,” said Rabbi Aviv. “That’s a hallmark, I think, of democracy.”

Concerned about divisiveness in today’s society, she said hopes that people will practice more kind and loving speech, something that is central not only to Judaism but to most religious beliefs.

“What was surprising is how much common ground there is between our traditions,” said Jammu. “We’re really not that different in terms of our values. We want fairness, we want justice, we want truth.”
